Big Island Grown has opened in downtown Honokaa and is dedicated solely to providing merchandise made on the Big Island. Owners Kenneth and Michelle Barthel have assembled a diverse variety of goods being grown and produced locally, including handmade jewelry, artwork, Hamakua coffee, tea and gourmet snacks, as well as locally produced clothing and hair and body care products.
A grand opening celebration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Sunday. Many of the shop’s local vendors and artists will attend to exhibit and offer samples of their products. Door prizes will be awarded to the first 20 customers every day and drawings for gift baskets and prizes from its local vendors will be held.

Queens’ MarketPlace kicking off season
As the holidays approach, Queens’ MarketPlace launches the season of celebration with lights, music and more from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Teamed up with WAVE 92.1, the free festivities include prize giveaways, live bands and the countdown to “lights on,” when the touch of a switch brings the entire mall aglow with thousands of sparkling lights.
Live entertainment takes place all afternoon and evening at the Coronation Pavilion — from the sweet Hawaiian sounds of The Kupukaas to Mystik Rhythmz’ blues, funk, reggae and pop hits, and the laid back, rhythm-based rock originals of Life In Pursuit. Radio personalities from WAVE 92.1 FM will be on hand to introduce the station with a live remote and rewards for new and future fans.

Crosby selected nurse practitioner of year
Vickie Crosby, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner and founder of the Ocean View Family Health Clinic, has been named the Hawaii Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. The honor is awarded annually to one of Hawaii’s outstanding nurse practitioners for their leadership, innovation and service to their communities.
Crosby serves more than 3,000 patients every year in the Ocean View area, and serves as a clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner students from the University of Hawaii. She is also the vice president of the Ka‘u Rural Health Association.
Honokaa nurse receives award
Niddhi Chabora, MSN APRN-Rx, Honokaa, is the 2012 recipient of the the Hawaii Association of Professional Nurses’ annual award for innovation-individual.
The award recognizes nurses who personify excellence in the various facets of psychiatric mental health care. Receiving an APNA annual award represents one of the highest forms of recognition from one’s psychiatric nursing peers; award recipients are nominated by their colleagues and chosen by a committee of their fellow APNA members.
Also honored was Allen Novak, MS, APRN-Rx, Hilo, a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association APRN Council Steering Committee.
He has been selected to be a member of the American Nurses Credentialing Center Content Expert Panel, which develops the certification examination for adult psychiatric and mental health clinical nurse specialists.
